The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office is currently awaiting lab results before reaching a decision on whether to charge state Sen. Sabrina Cervantes with driving under the influence. The spokesperson mentioned that once the reports are received, a thorough review of all the facts will be conducted to determine the next steps. Until then, further comments will be reserved.
Denial of Wrongdoing
Senator Cervantes, a Riverside Democrat with prior service in the Assembly, has denied any wrongdoing. She claims that Sacramento police officers detained her involuntarily for hours at the hospital after a collision with another vehicle on Monday afternoon. Despite her denial, police cited her for a misdemeanor DUI after determining that she was under the influence.
Body Camera Footage Review
Officer Allison Smith, the department spokesperson, stated on Wednesday that she reviewed the body camera footage and found no indication that Senator Cervantes was accosted by the officers. She emphasized that the officers conducted a thorough investigation in a professional and respectful manner throughout the process.
Mayor’s Response
Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty declined to comment on Cervantes’ allegations regarding the officers’ behavior. McCarty, who served in the state Assembly representing Sacramento concurrently with Cervantes, chose not to engage in the matter publicly.
Lab Results Discrepancy
While Sacramento police have not disclosed the specific reasons for determining Senator Cervantes’ impairment, she released a statement asserting that the hospital’s lab results conclusively proved her sobriety with no presence of alcohol in her system.
