Brad Lander Receives Public Matching Funds for NYC Mayoral Race
City Comptroller Brad Lander received a significant boost in his bid for New York City Mayor as the Campaign Finance Board awarded him just under $3 million in public matching funds on Wednesday. This crucial payment not only solidified Lander’s decision to challenge incumbent Mayor Eric Adams but also rectified a previous paperwork error that hindered his campaign’s financial flow.
Financial Injection for Lander’s Campaign
The injection of funds into Lander’s political operation couldn’t have come at a better time, especially with the mayoral race gaining momentum. While Lander had amassed close to $1 million in contributions by October 7th, his campaign coffers were running low with less than $279,338 available. However, with the additional $218,299 raised by Lander, in anticipation of matching funds, his war chest is expected to swell to around $1 million.
Lander’s Challenge to Adams
As a prominent challenger to Mayor Eric Adams, Lander’s progressive stance has garnered significant attention. Despite his history of advocating for progressive policies, Lander recently unveiled a plan to address street homelessness, aligning himself with other left-leaning officials who are addressing New Yorkers’ concerns about crime.
While Lander remains a serious contender for Gracie Mansion, the missed paperwork deadline last month initially disqualified his campaign from public matching funds. This setback, however, has been overcome with the recent award, placing Lander back in contention alongside other notable candidates such as former Governor Andrew Cuomo and former Comptroller Scott Stringer.
Stringer’s Funding Boost
Additionally, the Campaign Finance Board also granted former Comptroller Scott Stringer an extra $68,500 in public matching funds, further fueling the competitive landscape of the mayoral race.
