A man who participated in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol made a shocking attempt to join the Russian military and fight against Ukraine, according to prosecutors.
In a surprising turn of events, the individual, Kevin Loftus, intended to permanently relocate to another country and join a foreign army in opposition to U.S. foreign policy. Loftus, a former U.S. army soldier, faced probation for his misdemeanor in the Capitol riot and now potentially faces a six-month jail sentence.
Background of the Case
The Jan. 6 riot, where supporters of Donald Trump stormed the Capitol to disrupt the transition of power to Joe Biden, has led to various legal repercussions. Despite Trump’s promises of pardons, the extent of such actions remains uncertain.
After pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge related to the riot, Loftus received probation. However, his recent actions have raised serious concerns, including attempts to leave the country and support the Russian military.
Attempted Flight and Arrest
Loftus tried to board a flight to Georgia, intending to eventually reach Russia for military service. His plans were foiled when airline authorities flagged his trip. Subsequently, he was apprehended in Iowa after driving away from his designated area without permission.
During interrogation, Loftus confessed to his intentions of fighting for Russia against Ukraine. Communication records on his phone with a contact named ‘GrishaPutin’ revealed detailed instructions on traveling to Russia and joining the military.
Legal Implications and FBI Investigation
Prosecutors are pushing for a jail term due to Loftus’ probation violation. The FBI’s involvement uncovered his plans and interactions supporting his desire to enlist in the Russian military.
Notably, Loftus is not the only Jan. 6 defendant attempting to flee the country. Evan Neumann, another individual linked to the riot, is currently sought by the FBI in Belarus.
