Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro took to the streets of Sao Paulo on Sunday to lead a public demonstration against his ongoing Supreme Court trial in the country. Thousands gathered on Paulista Avenue, a key location in the city, for what Bolsonaro termed as ‘an act for freedom, for justice.’
Bolsonaro’s Legal Battle
Bolsonaro and 33 of his allies are currently on trial for an alleged scheme to overturn the 2022 presidential election results and retain power. They are facing charges on five counts related to the purported plan.
Denial and Allegations
The ex-president vehemently denies the accusations, asserting that he is a victim of political persecution. If found guilty, Bolsonaro could potentially face a sentence of up to 12 years in prison.
Despite chants from supporters urging his return, Bolsonaro is prohibited from seeking office until 2030. This restriction stems from a ruling by Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court, which found him guilty of abusing his political authority and spreading unfounded claims about the nation’s electronic voting system.
As the legal battle continues, Bolsonaro’s defiance remains unwavering, with his loyal followers standing by his side in a show of solidarity.
