A lawyer embroiled in a scheme to overturn the 2020 election results and maintain Donald Trump’s presidency has been stripped of his license to practice law in New York.
Legal Consequences of Election Subversion
The New York appeals court ruling, issued on Thursday, revoked Kenneth Chesebro’s license due to his 2023 conviction in Georgia for his role in undermining the election process.
Chesebro confessed to aiding the creation of a plan to submit falsified pro-Trump electors from six states to Congress, aiming to alter the election outcome.
Impact on Justice System
The court panel emphasized that Chesebro’s actions severely harm the integrity of the justice system and challenge the fundamental principles of democracy that he swore to protect as a legal practitioner.
In October 2024, Chesebro had his license suspended by the appeals court. Having joined the state bar in 2007, Chesebro was previously involved in supporting Al Gore’s legal team after the 2000 presidential election.
Collaboration with Prosecutors
Aside from his guilty plea in Georgia, Chesebro cooperated with authorities in Arizona and Georgia and currently faces charges related to the fraudulent elector scheme in Wisconsin.
The panel criticized Chesebro’s nonchalant attitude towards his actions, particularly given his expertise in constitutional and election law.
Repercussions for Election Involvement
Notably, several lawyers linked to Trump’s bid to challenge the 2020 election outcomes have encountered repercussions. John Eastman, a key figure in Trump’s efforts, lost his law license in California in 2024.
