Arrest of Suspect
The man suspected of killing a Minnesota lawmaker and wounding another has been taken into custody, ending a two-day search that had the state on edge. Vance Boelter, 57, was arrested Sunday evening, though officials did not immediately disclose the location of his capture.
Investigation Details
Former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were tragically killed in their Brooklyn Park home, while Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were injured at their Champlin residence, about 9 miles away.
Authorities revealed that Boelter allegedly posed as a police officer, wearing a mask and modifying a vehicle to resemble a police car. A nationwide warrant was issued for his arrest, leading to a massive manhunt involving over 100 law enforcement officers and SWAT teams.
Motive Unclear
While a list of names, including lawmakers and community leaders, was found in the suspect’s possession, details on the motive remain undisclosed. The attacks have prompted increased security measures for state officials and canceled demonstrations against President Donald Trump.
Community Mourning
The Twin Cities community mourns the loss of the Hortmans, with tributes and messages left at the Minnesota State Capitol. Pam Stein, among many others, praised Melissa Hortman as a remarkable leader and hero.
Continuing Investigation
The investigation continues as officials gather evidence and statements from Boelter’s family members. Updates on Sen. Hoffman’s condition and the progress of the case are expected in the coming days.
