The United States Navy has made the decision to officially rename a naval vessel previously named after gay rights activist Harvey Milk. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth revealed this update, emphasizing the aim to ‘take the politics out of ship naming.’ This move coincides with efforts by the current administration to remove diversity and inclusion initiatives from various sectors.
Renaming in Honor of Oscar V. Peterson
The naval vessel, a fleet replenishment oiler, will now bear the name of Oscar V. Peterson, a distinguished Navy chief who tragically passed away due to injuries sustained during a World War II repair mission. Notably, Harvey Milk, the previous namesake, had also served in the Navy before embarking on his political endeavors.
Reports suggest that additional ships honoring civil rights leaders and notable women may undergo renaming, although Secretary Hegseth did not delve into specifics during the announcement.
