Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink has officially announced her bid for Congress in Michigan, positioning herself as a Democratic candidate in a closely watched race for the 2024 elections.
Championing Ukraine Against Russian Aggression
During her tenure in Kyiv, which lasted until April of this year, Brink dedicated her efforts to bolstering Ukraine’s defenses and opposing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions. In her campaign kickoff video, she highlighted the importance of standing by democratic allies like Ukraine in the face of authoritarian threats.
Standing Up Against Trump’s Policies
Brink did not shy away from critiquing the Trump administration’s foreign policy decisions, particularly its approach to Ukraine. She pointed out the imbalance in the administration’s treatment of Ukraine and Russia, emphasizing the need to support the victim, Ukraine, rather than appease the aggressor, Russia.
A Strong Challenge for the Battleground District
Brink’s decision to run for Congress comes after the narrow victory of Republican Rep. Tom Barrett in the battleground district. Democrats see an opportunity to reclaim the seat previously held by Sen. Elissa Slotkin, and Brink’s entry into the race adds a new dynamic.
Her primary opponent, Matt Maasdam, a former Navy SEAL with ties to the Obama administration, poses a credible challenge in the upcoming primary. The competition is expected to intensify as both candidates vie for the Democratic nomination.
Roots in Michigan, Experience in Diplomacy
Before her diplomatic postings in Ukraine and Slovakia, Brink’s roots in Michigan shaped her worldview. Her nomination as ambassador to Slovakia in 2019 followed years of service at the State Department, showcasing her deep expertise in international relations.
