The Deseret News has criticized Senator Mike Lee for his social media posts regarding the recent shootings in Minnesota, stating that his comments were inappropriate for a member of the Senate.
Senator Lee’s Controversial Posts
The Utah-based publication, owned by the Deseret Management Corporation, expressed concerns about Lee’s messages that seemed to place blame on Democrats, including Governor Tim Walz, for the violence in Minnesota.
The editorial board of the Deseret News emphasized that such tweets lacked compassion for the victims and their families, tarnishing Utah’s image.
Senator Lee’s office has not responded to these criticisms.
Backlash and Reactions
Following the shootings in Minnesota, Senator Lee posted comments on social media, insinuating connections to Marxism and making derogatory remarks about the alleged shooter.
His statements prompted strong reactions from fellow Congressional members, including Senator Tina Smith, who confronted Lee about the impact of his words on the victims’ families.
Senator Amy Klobuchar also addressed Lee’s posts, expressing her concerns.
Even within his own party, Senator Lee faced criticism. Senator Kevin Cramer described Lee’s comments as insensitive and inappropriate, calling for accountability.
Call for Apology
Senator Lee eventually deleted the controversial posts, but the Deseret News editorial board is urging him to issue a formal apology.
According to the board, removing the tweets was a first step, but a public apology and acknowledgment of the mistake are necessary.
