California Governor Gavin Newsom has raised concerns about Donald Trump’s mental acuity amid a dispute over the federalization and deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles following anti-deportation protests and unrest.
In a recent episode of “The Daily,” Governor Newsom recounted his conversations with President Trump, highlighting conflicting accounts of their discussions over the National Guard. While Trump claimed to have brought up the issue during a Saturday morning conversation, Newsom refuted this, accusing Trump of lying. Newsom emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “He lied, on my mother and dad’s grave. I don’t mess around when I say this. He lied. Stone cold liar.”
Questioning Trump’s Statements
Newsom further alleged that Trump began fabricating parts of their conversation, which deeply troubled him. He expressed concerns about Trump’s mental state, stating, “He’s not all there.” This criticism from Newsom, a potential presidential candidate in 2028, followed his earlier remarks about Trump’s cognitive decline, noting that Trump is “not the same person” as before and is now incapable of coherent thoughts.
Political Attacks and Responses
Throughout the 2024 campaign and Trump’s second administration, Trump and his supporters frequently attacked Joe Biden’s mental fitness. In response, Trump has criticized Newsom, even resorting to derogatory nicknames like “Gavin Newscum.” Despite Trump’s jabs, Newsom has maintained his stance on the situation in Los Angeles, emphasizing the city’s safety in recent days.
On social media platform Truth Social, Trump claimed that Los Angeles was secure due to his actions, implying that Newsom should acknowledge his efforts. However, Newsom has stood firm, highlighting the need for accountability and addressing any mistakes.
