House Democrats are gearing up for a caucus election on June 24 to fill the party’s top job on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, left vacant by the late Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia, according to sources granted anonymity to speak freely.
Candidates in the Running
The competition for the panel’s ranking member position, which serves as a significant counterpoint to President Donald Trump’s administration, is shaping up to be a competitive four-way race. The contenders include Reps. Jasmine Crockett of Texas, Stephen Lynch of Massachusetts, Kweisi Mfume of Maryland, and Robert Garcia of California.
While lawmakers have refrained from public campaigning out of respect for Connolly, behind-the-scenes maneuvering has already begun. Crockett, known as a rising star in the caucus, has been actively advocating for the role, while Mfume and Garcia have also been engaging with their colleagues.
Open Field
With Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez opting out of the race to retain her seat on the Energy and Commerce Committee, many House Democrats view the Oversight Committee race as wide-open. Ocasio-Cortez had previously contested against Connolly but did not succeed.
The selection process will involve candidates presenting their case to the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, which will then offer recommendations to the full caucus for ratification.
