Chief of Space Operations Gen. B. Chance Saltzman issued a stark warning about the escalating threats posed by Chinese and Russian advancements in space technology during the POLITICO Security Summit. The rapid technological progress led by these two nations has raised concerns about the security of U.S. space assets.
The Threat of the ‘Kill Web’
Gen. Saltzman raised particular alarm about China’s development of what has been dubbed a ‘kill web.’ This sophisticated network comprises hundreds of satellites functioning as a sensor network, providing real-time updates and high-quality targeting information to track and potentially disrupt U.S. space capabilities.
Challenges in the Indo Pacific Region
The Chief of Space Operations emphasized the urgent need to enhance U.S. capabilities to counter the satellite network, especially given its significant impact on the Indo Pacific region.
Russia’s Growing Space Capabilities
While China’s ‘kill web’ is a major concern, Gen. Saltzman also highlighted Russia’s rapid advancements in space technology. The collaboration between Russia and China on projects like the International Lunar Research Station poses significant challenges to U.S. space defense.
Gen. Saltzman pointed out Russia’s aggressive behaviors in the space domain, including the destruction of a satellite in 2021, cyber attacks, and ambitions to deploy nuclear weapons in orbit. These actions raise serious security threats and necessitate a robust response from the U.S. to safeguard its interests.
Expanding Space Capabilities
Recent agreements between China and Russia to establish a joint nuclear power plant on the moon for their International Lunar Research Station project highlight their growing ambitions in space exploration. This development intensifies the competition with the U.S.-led Artemis moon mission, underscoring the need for proactive measures to protect U.S. interests in space.
