Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) issued a stark warning on Wednesday, stressing the undeniable importance of the United States’ unwavering commitment to its NATO allies, especially in light of escalating Russian provocations.
Speaking at a POLITICO event during the Munich Leaders Meeting in Washington, Pelosi highlighted the concerning rhetoric from President Donald Trump in the past regarding the NATO alliance. Despite acknowledging previous frivolous remarks, Pelosi firmly asserted that the US must stand by its allies and uphold the crucial principle of mutual defense outlined in Article 5. She emphasized that the US also relies on the assurance of allied support in times of future crises.
The Significance of Honoring Commitments
Pelosi underscored the reciprocity of commitment, stating, “If we as the United States of America do not honor our commitments, I don’t know how we expect people to honor their commitments to us.” She reflected on the immediate solidarity shown by NATO countries following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, where Article 5 was invoked for the first and only time in response to the terrorist attacks.
Referencing President Trump’s criticisms of countries failing to meet the 2 percent GDP defense spending target, Pelosi criticized the notion of conditional mutual defense. She firmly stated, “I don’t think that the president of the United States should say to a NATO country, if you haven’t paid 2 percent, I say to Russia, have at them.”
Rebuilding Trust and Strengthening Ties
While acknowledging the strained relationship between the US and NATO member states, Pelosi expressed hope for repairing and fortifying these crucial ties. She humorously critiqued the Trump administration’s unconventional proposals, including the idea of annexing Greenland, quipping that more people believe Elvis Presley is alive than Greenlanders wanting US integration.
She also commended Vice President JD Vance for his recent conciliatory remarks on transatlantic relations and peace efforts in Ukraine. Vance’s shift in tone towards a more collaborative approach between Europe and the US was well received by Pelosi and other allies present.
Ultimately, Pelosi’s message resonates with the necessity of maintaining a steadfast commitment to NATO, not just for the US’s security but also for fostering enduring alliances and global stability.
