OTTAWA — King Charles is scheduled to travel to Canada at the end of the month to inaugurate a new session of Parliament, announced Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday.
The king’s visit to Ottawa will include the delivery of the ‘throne speech,’ a vital address that will highlight the focus areas of Carney’s administration in the face of challenges posed by U.S. President Donald Trump and ongoing trade disputes.
Historic Visit of King Charles
Carney revealed the details of the king’s ‘historic’ appearance slated for May 27 during his first post-election press briefing following the Liberals’ substantial victory in the recent federal polls.
Confirmation of King Charles and Queen Camilla’s arrival on May 26 was provided by the Royal Family’s official X account.
Expressing the significance of the royal visit, Carney remarked, ‘This honor is of great historical importance, aligning with the demands of our contemporary era. With Monday’s election results, Canadians have mandated a new government to confront President Trump and foster a robust economy.’
Bilateral Talks with President Trump
In addition to the royal visit, Carney disclosed his plan to journey to Washington on Tuesday for a meeting with President Trump.
Public sentiment towards the monarchy underwent a shift when King Charles assumed his role in 2022, with polls indicating widespread support for abolishing the institution. This sentiment was evident during Charles and Camilla’s brief 72-hour visit to Canada in 2022 to mark Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee.
