New York City’s largest private sector union, 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, has officially endorsed Andrew Cuomo’s mayoral bid, highlighting his strong support for healthcare workers and various progressive initiatives. President George Gresham emphasized Cuomo’s track record in securing a $15 minimum wage, expanding paid family leave, championing marriage equality, and advocating for immigrant rights.
Commitment to Working People
Gresham stated, “New York is at a crossroads, and we need leaders who will stand up for working people, fight for good union jobs, and ensure every New Yorker has access to quality healthcare, affordable housing, and a living wage.” He further added, “Our members recognize that Governor Cuomo is the clear choice to lead New York forward during these challenging times.”
With a membership base of 200,000 healthcare workers across the five boroughs, the union’s endorsement holds significant weight in local politics. Notably, the union played a pivotal role in the election of former Mayor Bill de Blasio, making it a sought-after endorsement among local politicians.
Political Dynamics
However, recent internal developments within the union have raised questions about the impact of their endorsements. The union’s political influence has waned due to a lack of a permanent political director and growing disenchantment among members. In the 2021 mayoral race, the union backed May Wiley, signaling a shift in their traditional support base.
Despite President Gresham’s historical alliance with Cuomo, marked by a recent call for resignation, the union’s endorsement process faced delays. Internal elections, the first contested leadership race since 1989, coincided with ongoing challenges within the union, including scrutiny over financial management.
Future Implications
As the union navigates its internal dynamics, Cuomo’s campaign remains intertwined with the union’s history of support. Past contributions to Cuomo’s gubernatorial campaigns and advocacy efforts through affiliated organizations underscore the enduring relationship between the former governor and healthcare workers.
Rich Azzopardi, Cuomo’s campaign spokesperson, refrained from commenting on recent investigations into the union’s financial affairs. The union’s endorsement, coupled with ongoing leadership changes, reflects a pivotal moment in their political engagement.
