A Justice Department lawyer who raised concerns about the erroneous deportation of a man to El Salvador has been placed on administrative leave, according to a DOJ official.
Erez Reuveni, representing the Trump administration in a federal court hearing, advocated for Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s return to the U.S. following a deportation error by immigration officials.
During the hearing, Reuveni’s reluctance towards the government’s stance was evident as he tried to gather more information about Abrego Garcia’s classification as an MS-13 member.
Abrego Garcia, who entered the U.S. illegally in 2012, faced a risk of persecution in El Salvador, which led to an order preventing his deportation there. Despite this, he was deported, prompting legal actions for his return.
Despite Reuveni’s pleas for more time to change the government’s position, the judge ordered Abrego Garcia’s return to the U.S. within a tight deadline.
Attorney General Pam Bondi criticized Reuveni for not vigorously defending the government’s stance, emphasizing the DOJ’s commitment to advocating for the United States.
Reuveni, a DOJ attorney for over 15 years, was suspended for not following directives and engaging in conduct deemed detrimental to the client’s interests.
The Justice Department appealed the judge’s decision, filing motions to stay the order and appealing to the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals.
Updates on this case are awaited as the legal battle continues.
