The Trump administration has announced a comprehensive review of the federal grants and contracts awarded to Harvard University as part of its efforts to combat antisemitism on college campuses.
The departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and the General Services Administration will conduct a review of the more than $255.6 million in contracts with Harvard and its affiliates. Additionally, they will review the more than $8.7 billion in multi-year grant commitments to the university.
Ensuring Compliance with Federal Regulations
The Education Department officials have stated that the purpose of this review is to ensure Harvard’s compliance with federal regulations, including its civil rights responsibilities.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon emphasized the importance of upholding the American Dream symbolized by Harvard, expressing concerns about the university’s failure to protect students from discrimination and promote free inquiry.
Harvard is yet to respond to the administration’s request for comment regarding the review.
Context and Recent Developments
This review follows the administration’s threat to withhold $400 million in grant funding from Columbia University over concerns about protecting Jewish students during protests. Subsequently, Harvard implemented a hiring freeze.
Columbia has since agreed to meet the administration’s demands, including changes in disciplinary procedures and organizational restructuring within certain departments.
The Trump administration commended Columbia for its actions but has not indicated whether it will restore the university’s federal funding.
Institutions found in violation of compliance standards may face administrative actions, such as contract termination, according to Education Department officials.
