A federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order to halt immigration authorities’ efforts to detain a Columbia University student, Yunseo Chung, who alleges she is targeted for her pro-Palestinian protest involvement.
Legal Action and Allegations
Manhattan-based U.S. District Judge Naomi Buchwald granted the order after Chung’s lawyers claimed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered her green card revoked due to her alleged impact on U.S. foreign policy.
Rubio’s actions have also led to deportation attempts against other students, sparking lawsuits advocating for their release on grounds of First Amendment protection.
Response from Authorities
The U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan has not commented on the judge’s ruling, while similar legal actions are unfolding in Syracuse, New York, involving another student, Momodou Taal, seeking protection from immigration enforcement.
These cases highlight the intersection of immigration law, free speech rights, and government actions in response to student activism.
