Locked out of power in Washington, two of the country’s most influential progressives hit the road together Thursday to criticize President Donald Trump and his ally Elon Musk in a battleground.
As Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) energized supporters in Nevada on Thursday, they couldn’t avoid the Democratic Party’s internal conflicts in Washington.
Challenging the Status Quo
Supporters intermittently shouted “Primary Chuck!” at Ocasio-Cortez during her speech, reflecting the backlash against Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for supporting a government funding bill with Republicans.
Both Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez accused Trump and Musk of prioritizing their wealth over working-class Americans, emphasizing crucial issues like healthcare and minimum wage. This underscored the push to refocus the Democratic Party’s attention on Trump rather than internal disputes.
Empowering Progressives
Ocasio-Cortez criticized Trump’s actions, stating, “Now that he’s in power we can see it clear as day. He’s handed the keys to Elon Musk and is selling this country for parts to the richest people on the planet for a kickback.”
The crowd’s response highlighted Democratic hopes in countering Musk’s negative image and the progressive base’s call for more impactful actions from the party.
Building a Stronger Democratic Party
“We need a Democratic Party that fights harder for us too,” Ocasio-Cortez emphasized, urging support for candidates willing to challenge Republicans fiercely.
The event formed part of Sanders’ nationwide “Fighting Oligarchy” tour, following earlier stops in Iowa and Wisconsin. Their joint appearances across the Southwest, including in Arizona and Colorado, aimed to engage voters and promote progressive values.
Looking Towards the Future
While Sanders’ fundraising success hinted at a potential presidential bid, his partnership with Ocasio-Cortez showcased a cross-generational progressive movement. Their united front addressed recent controversies within the Democratic Party, signaling a commitment to change.
As Sanders reiterated Ocasio-Cortez’s message, he highlighted her connection to working-class roots, emphasizing their shared goal of combating oligarchy and billionaire influence.
Their presence in Las Vegas symbolized a rejection of an oligarchic society and a call for a more equitable government that prioritizes the people over the elite.
