Amidst the escalating trade war with the Trump administration, Canada’s provinces are strategically turning to lobbying firms in Washington for support. Saskatchewan, an oil-rich province, has retained HBW Resources to advocate for energy reliability and affordability while promoting diverse energy options for American families and businesses.
Strategic Partnerships for Energy Security
In a bid to enhance energy security and reduce regulatory barriers, Saskatchewan and Alberta have joined the Governors’ Coalition for Energy Security. Premier Scott Moe of Saskatchewan emphasized the importance of the trading relationship between the provinces and the U.S., highlighting the mutual economic success derived from integrated energy sectors.
Quebec has also stepped up its lobbying efforts in Washington, enlisting Florida-based Becker & Poliakoff to formulate an engagement strategy. The firm aims to facilitate strategic meetings for Quebec’s Premier François Legault, foster high-level networking opportunities, and improve communication with Republican elected officials and the White House.
Expanding Lobbying Support
Since President Trump’s rhetoric on annexation and imposition of tariffs, several Canadian entities have bolstered their lobbying presence in Washington. Ballard Partners, led by prominent Trump fundraiser Brian Ballard, has collaborated with Quebec-based firm TACT to enhance communication and public affairs efforts.
New Brunswick, the Porter O’Brien Agency, the Ingram Group, and Checkmate Government Relations have also been enlisted for various lobbying and trade mission initiatives. Alberta, in addition to its partnership with HBW Resources, has engaged new firms to navigate the evolving trade landscape.
Strengthening Cross-Border Partnerships
Prior to Trump’s presidency, Capitol Counsel forged a cross-border partnership with Canadian firm Rubicon Strategy Inc., reflecting the significance of transnational collaboration in navigating policy changes and trade dynamics.
These strategic lobbying endeavors underscore Canada’s proactive stance in safeguarding its interests and fostering robust ties with key stakeholders amid the uncertain terrain of international trade relations.
