Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.) expressed strong criticism towards the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency’s initiatives to reduce spending and personnel at the Agriculture Department during POLITICO Playbook’s First 100 Days breakfast series.
Smith firmly stated, “I believe their actions are fundamentally misguided and contrary to the legislative intentions and policies we have enacted.” She further added, “Frankly, I doubt that Elon Musk or the individuals from DOGE truly comprehend the repercussions of their decisions or the ramifications they entail.”
Advocating for USDA Support
Smith disclosed ongoing discussions with her peers regarding the critical need to secure adequate funding and staffing for regional and local USDA offices, vital for delivering crucial information to farmers on federal resources.
Under the previous administration, numerous probationary employees at USDA, including those involved in bird flu response, farm loans, and wildfire management, were terminated. Despite the reinstatement of approximately 5,000 workers following a federal civil service board ruling, there are looming plans for a broad “reduction in force” across the government, which could result in further workforce reductions.
Call for Action
Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, Smith emphasized the necessity for collective advocacy in support of USDA functions. This sentiment was echoed by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) at the same event, condemning the dismissals of federal employees by the previous administration and underscoring the adverse impact of terminating probationary or recently promoted staff.
Klobuchar, along with Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colorado), spearheaded a joint appeal in February urging the USDA to reinstate terminated personnel.
