Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) expressed concerns about how a government shutdown could exacerbate the challenges faced by the nation’s farmers and ranchers, who are already grappling with economic difficulties resulting from the policies of the Trump administration.
“The last thing that I want to see is a shutdown,” Klobuchar emphasized during POLITICO Playbook’s First 100 Days breakfast series.
Farmers and Ranchers’ Struggles
In the initial weeks of the Trump administration, farmers and ranchers have been significantly impacted by a series of policies that have created turmoil, including President Donald Trump’s extensive tariffs.
“All of this is coming at them at once,” Klobuchar lamented.
Senate Democrats’ Dilemma
As the looming shutdown threatens to take effect early Saturday morning, Senate Democrats find themselves in a challenging position. While they have indicated reluctance to support the House GOP’s funding bill, they are also considering an alternative – a 30-day stopgap bill in exchange for aiding the House bill.
“Democrats are ‘united’ behind the 30-day bill,” Klobuchar affirmed.
