Former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, a prominent figure in the Republican Party, declared his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by former GOP stalwart Mitch McConnell.
Cameron, who previously ran for governor in 2023 without success, brings significant name recognition and the ability to lead a robust statewide campaign, having made history as Kentucky’s first Black attorney general in 2019.
Following in McConnell’s Footsteps
Regarded as McConnell’s natural successor, Cameron wasted no time in announcing his Senate bid shortly after his mentor’s retirement announcement.
“Kentucky deserves fresh leadership in the U.S. Senate,” Cameron declared as he launched his campaign on the social media platform X. “Let’s make it happen.”
While facing competition for the Republican nomination from Rep. Andy Barr (R-KY) and businessman Nate Morris, many see Cameron as the frontrunner.
