Cardinal Joseph Tobin Takes Action
Cardinal Joseph Tobin, the archbishop of the Diocese of Newark, has announced the hiring of a law firm to conduct a comprehensive third-party review of a 2019 investigation into sexual abuse at Seton Hall University.
The investigation implicated Monsignor Joseph Reilly, the university’s new president, who was promoted despite recommendations for his removal from leadership positions due to his knowledge of sexual abuse allegations.
Ropes & Gray to Conduct Review
Cardinal Tobin has enlisted the firm Ropes & Gray to delve into the facts surrounding the previous investigation by Latham & Watkins. The review will also assess the development of the Responsive Action Plan adopted by the university in response to the findings.
The comprehensive review by Ropes & Gray will examine the communication of these reports to relevant personnel and Monsignor Reilly, ensuring transparency and accountability.
Defense and Calls for Resignation
Seton Hall has staunchly defended Monsignor Reilly against recent calls for his resignation, emphasizing that he has been unfairly portrayed in the media. However, state lawmakers and Governor Phil Murphy have urged the release of the internal report on Reilly, a request the university has thus far ignored.
Previous investigations into sexual abuse at the university revealed a culture of fear and intimidation under former Archbishop McCarrick. Monsignor Reilly’s handling of sexual assault complaints and his failure to adhere to university policies have come under scrutiny.
Archbishop Tobin’s Commitment
In response to the ongoing investigations and questions surrounding Monsignor Reilly’s actions, Archbishop Tobin reaffirmed his dedication to healing past wounds and restoring trust within the Catholic Church. He emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in addressing the sins of the past.
As the Archbishop of Newark, Cardinal Tobin holds a position of authority over Seton Hall University and remains committed to serving as a moral voice for the Catholic Church in northern New Jersey.
