The Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, expressed support for President Donald Trump’s plans regarding Gaza, emphasizing the importance of not forcibly removing Palestinians from their land.
Trump’s Controversial Proposal
During a recent joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump announced the United States’ intention to ‘take over the Gaza Strip.’ This proposal entails relocating approximately 2 million Palestinians to neighboring countries while pledging to rebuild the war-torn region.
Despite the lack of specifics on how the U.S. would acquire the territory, the possibility of deploying American troops to administer Gaza was not ruled out. Netanyahu showed his support for the plan during the press conference.
International Reactions
The proposal has met criticism from various quarters, especially from Arab nations. Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry cautioned the U.S. about Palestinian rights and warned of potential diplomatic repercussions with Israel. Jordan, Egypt, and other Arab countries have strongly opposed previous relocation efforts by the Trump administration. Western allies, including the United Kingdom, have also voiced concerns.
The controversial proposal overshadowed discussions on the cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, with Netanyahu indicating a willingness to resume conflict to eliminate Hamas.
Political Divisions
The plan has sparked mixed reactions within the U.S. political landscape. Key Republican figures like Sen. Lindsey Graham have expressed reservations, awaiting feedback from Arab allies. On the other hand, Democrats have largely criticized the proposal.
Ambassador Danon highlighted the necessity for alternative solutions if Trump’s plan does not materialize, emphasizing Israel’s stance against Hamas retaining power in Gaza.
He warned of potential future conflicts if Hamas remains in control, stating, ‘If Hamas persists, it’s only a matter of time before we must act against Gaza once more.’
