Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Monday that her country had reached agreements with President Donald Trump, leading to a one-month hold on tariffs, effective immediately.
President Trump confirmed the delay in a post on Truth Social, mentioning the deployment of 10,000 soldiers from Mexico to the U.S.-Mexico border as a key factor. The one-month extension exclusively applies to Mexico and not to Canada or China, which also faced tariffs over the weekend.
Further Negotiations and High-Level Talks
President Trump outlined that Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick will engage in high-level discussions during this one-month pause to progress negotiations.
Expressing his anticipation for these talks, Trump emphasized the pursuit of a favorable “deal” between the two countries in collaboration with President Sheinbaum.
Focus on Border Security and Drug Trafficking
President Sheinbaum highlighted that the troops stationed at Mexico’s northern border will combat drug trafficking, especially the flow of fentanyl from Mexico to the U.S.
Emphasizing the importance of border security, a White House official mentioned Trump’s continued emphasis on border security actions from Canada and Mexico, as well as efforts to halt the influx of fentanyl from China.
Tariffs and Negotiation Flexibility
The official clarified that the recent tariffs primarily focus on border security concerns rather than impacting trade relationships. Trump’s executive orders included tariffs on North American neighbors and a 10 percent increase on Chinese tariffs.
Notably, the executive orders allow for tariff adjustments in response to retaliatory measures, providing the administration with flexibility for ongoing negotiations.
It’s evident that all three countries are actively addressing Trump’s concerns regarding fentanyl and undocumented migration, with a mutual goal of finding resolutions and preventing retaliatory actions.
