Democratic mayors in some of America’s largest cities are strategizing their responses after the GOP-led House Oversight committee launched an investigation into their jurisdictions over immigration and requested city leaders testify before Congress.
Mayors Weigh Options Amid House Oversight Probe
Mayors in Boston and Chicago are deliberating on how to address a letter from Oversight Chair Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) sent Monday night, which requested information and potential testimony before the House. Both mayors, representing sanctuary cities, are considering legal and political avenues in response to President Donald Trump’s assertive stance on immigration.
“I’m standing with the full force of government today to demonstrate that Chicago is a welcoming city regardless of who’s in the White House,” Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson affirmed, flanked by the police superintendent and his management team.
Besides Chicago and Boston, Comer’s letter also reached mayor Eric Adams in New York City and Mayor Mike Johnston in Denver. This move underscores ongoing efforts by the White House and Republicans to target sanctuary cities, which resist federal cooperation on immigration enforcement since Trump assumed office.
Varied Reactions to Federal Actions
While ICE operations unfolded in Chicago over the weekend, the Department of Homeland Security collaborated with the New York Police Department in a targeted arrest operation related to violent crimes. Mayor Adams emphasized the city’s willingness to partner with federal authorities against violent offenders.
Conversely, Mayor Johnson urged President Trump to focus on legislation enhancing border security, criticizing the use of immigration policies to instill fear in communities and consolidate power.

In Boston, Mayor Michelle Wu stated the city is reviewing the letter and emphasized adherence to local laws. She highlighted the need for stability amidst federal uncertainties, reaffirming the city’s commitment to daily responsibilities and community welfare.
