Federal DEI Websites Shutdown: Impact of Trump's Order on Diversity Initiatives
Federal government websites dedicated to diversity, inclusion, and equity were abruptly taken offline following the White House’s ultimatum of ‘adverse consequences’ for agencies failing to disclose DEI-related data within 10 days.
White House Directive Sparks Shutdown
The shutdown occurred right after the Office of Personnel Management issued a memo instructing agencies to place all DEI employees on paid leave by a specific deadline. Notably, agency heads were mandated to remove all external DEI content promptly.
Heightened Surveillance on DEI Programs
Email communications circulated among agency staff expressed vigilance against potential masking of DEI initiatives through ambiguous language. Employees were urged to report any alterations in DEI contracts or personnel roles post-election to the OPM.
Consequences of Non-Compliance
The emails underscored the importance of timely reporting, assuring no repercussions for prompt disclosure. However, the failure to adhere to the 10-day reporting deadline could lead to adverse ramifications.
Agency Commitment to DEI
Each agency’s webpage highlighted its dedication to DEI, showcasing initiatives aimed at fostering diversity and inclusion. For instance, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services emphasized the value of diversity in enhancing organizational efficiency.
The National Institutes of Health outlined a comprehensive DEI strategy aligned with its mission, as documented in archived web pages.
Remaining Webpages and Unanswered Queries
While certain health equity-focused pages remained accessible, questions loomed over the fate of DEI platforms. Despite inquiries, entities like HHS, CMS, NIH, and the White House declined to comment on the situation.
Notably, pages dedicated to health equity initiatives, such as CMS’ Office of Minority Health, persisted online amidst the upheaval.
