Federal Judge Stresses the Indelible Truth of Jan. 6 Despite Trump's Pardons
A federal judge passionately emphasized the enduring truth of the events that unfolded on January 6, despite President Donald Trump’s pardons and dismissals of charges against individuals involved in the Capitol attack. The judge, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, resolutely stated that no amount of pardons or convictions could alter the immutable record of the violence and the valor displayed by law enforcement on that fateful day.
The Unchanging Record of January 6
In a pointed six-page order absolving Dominic Box, previously convicted of two felony counts related to the riot, Judge Kollar-Kotelly underscored the significance of preserving the truth. She asserted, “Dismissal of charges, pardons after convictions, and commutations of sentences will not change the truth of what happened on January 6, 2021.”
She elaborated that the undeniable events of that day are immortalized through numerous contemporaneous videos, trial transcripts, jury verdicts, and judicial opinions that present an impartial account of the evidence. These records stand as an unalterable testament to the reality of January 6, regardless of attempts to distort it.
Recognition of Law Enforcement’s Valor
Judge Kollar-Kotelly, appointed by President Clinton, became the first judicial voice to speak out following Trump’s far-reaching clemency actions that encompassed over 1,500 Jan. 6 cases. Notably, the judge highlighted the heroism exhibited by law enforcement officers who valiantly defended the Capitol and its occupants against overwhelming odds.
She commended the officers for their unwavering commitment to duty in safeguarding the elected officials, staff, and the sanctity of the Capitol premises. Despite facing aggression and violence, the officers stood firm, sustaining injuries and, tragically, losing some of their colleagues in the line of duty. Judge Kollar-Kotelly emphasized that the bravery and sacrifices of these officers will forever be commemorated in the annals of history.
Preservation of Historical Truth
Concluding her remarks, the judge affirmed that the valorous actions of law enforcement on January 6 have been documented for posterity, ensuring that the events of that day will be accurately judged in the future. She reiterated that the indelible record stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication of those who defended the Capitol against unprecedented threats.
