During a brief interaction with reporters outside a New Year’s Eve celebration at Mar-a-Lago, the president-elect reiterated his endorsement of the Louisiana Republican, emphasizing that ‘he’s the one that can win right now.’ This show of support comes at a critical juncture for Johnson’s speakership, with a fragile path to retaining the position. Given the projected composition of Congress on the upcoming vote day, Johnson can afford only two Republican defections, and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has already signaled his opposition.
Additionally, Trump disclosed his intention to attend the late former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral. Despite previously criticizing Carter as a ‘forgotten president’ and a ‘terrible president,’ Trump’s tone towards his predecessor shifted in a recent statement. Following the news of Carter’s passing, Trump commended his efforts to enhance the lives of all Americans, acknowledging the debt of gratitude owed to him. However, Trump refrained from confirming any communication with Carter’s family members.
